How I’m Discovering Stories Buried in My New York City Photos
by Barrett

I’ve been snapping photos in New York City for most of my life. But I’ve only recently started thinking of them as collections that tell multiple stories. So, I decided it was finally time to uncover some of them.
I’ve started to review and organize my pictures by ‘themes,’ and from this exercise, I’ve created my first three photo essays.
I think of this creative output as an exploration that will lead to other variations and differing themes. But I’m happy to share these early photo collages.
Anonymous in New York?
There’s so much happening on the streets of New York that anything and everything generally blends into the background. But if you take a moment and look around, you may be surprised by what you see (or perhaps not).

Sidewalk Show
A photo opportunity is sometimes a creative display, and the intention may be so strong, it’s almost impossible to look away. Your camera is drawn to the moment. This can easily happen on a New York sidewalk, which is the perfect place to set up a ‘show.’ For example, here’s what I walked through on the Lower East Side… a pop-up photo ‘carnival’ from Fujifilm FUJIKINA 2026.

Iconic
In The Big Apple, you can easily run into an iconic scene if you simply widen your camera’s view and take in the New York moment with fellow New Yorkers filling the frame. So just keep it wide and snap away!

Looking Back to Move Forward
Of course, I know that finding broader themes buried in my photo collections goes far beyond my New York City photography. (There’s a lot of work ahead.) As I dig, it feels overwhelming, though entirely necessary.
And I think this journey will also help guide me in my photographic work moving forward.
To know where you’re going, you sometimes need to remind yourself where you’ve been.
