The Perfect Portable Night Light for Children

Putting your kids to sleep on the road can have its particular set of challenges. If being able to create dim lighting for the perfect sleeping conditions is important to you, then you no longer need to look beyond the moon for your solution…

My seven-year-old son is a great sleeper. One variable that’s contributed to this happy state (For him as well as my wife and me) has been the use of a night light in his room over the years. It just helps him go to sleep. We’ve used different night lights and currently have one from Pottery Barn Kids that’s constructed into the ‘Rowan Base’ of his bedroom lamp. So, the lamp has two light bulbs… one regular… the other a night light.
(Clever)

But as you might imagine, sleeping elsewhere can create something of a challenge to create the same dim-light ambiance for him.

Of course, you can always take the same night light with you on your travels, but that’s not always a practical choice.

More often than not, I’ve had to figure it out in the moment whenever we’ve entered a hotel room.
(It’s not been beyond me to do a little redecorating.)

I should also mention that the whole night-light equation has become less of a critical issue of late. A slightly cracked door to the bathroom with its light on is now just fine for him.

Of course, it is… now, that I’ve found the perfect solution.
So, for those of you parents out there who are still trying to figure out an ideal portable night light to take with you, here it is…

Moonbase Alpha
It’s called ‘Moonlight,’ and it’s a battery-driven illuminated plastic moon the size of large grapefruit.

It’s not exactly cylindrical since it’s got a flat bottom, but that allows you to safely place it anywhere.
(As you can see in the photo at the top of the page)

Made by a British company called Paladone, it’s constructed of a rubbery material that makes it a little squishy. And it quickly ‘reinflates’ after being squeezed by curious hands.
(My son has demonstrated this ‘trick’ to me several times.)

The Moonlight weighs almost nothing.
It runs on three LR44 button batteries.
It fits easily into a suitcase.
And It throws off just enough light.

It’s seemingly indestructible.
It’s perfect.

And It’s $13.63 on Amazon Prime.

Next Generation
My son’s Moonlight showed up as a gift, and as I marveled at the little orb, I decided to do a little more research on this great concept. Of course, I found some competitors on the market…

The primary difference is rechargeable technology that allows you to plug in your moon instead of having to replace the batteries. That’s obviously a more environmentally friendly choice.

These rechargeable models appear to all be created with ‘3D printing’ technology. So, they’re not going to be squishy like my son’s Moonlight.
Also, they’re completely cylindrical, which requires you to use the included stand if you don’t want them to roll off their night table.

And they have different brightness and color settings, which is nifty.

LOL is No Joke
All of those enhancements of course make them more expensive.

For example:

LOL claims you’ll get 4-20 hours of illumination on one charge depending on the brightness setting.

Goodnight Moon
So, for occasional use, I think that any of these wonderful little orbs will get the job done. But if it becomes an often-used item in the bedroom, you’re going to have to consider the convenience of having to regularly recharge or replacing the batteries.

Unless…
…Your child’s moon also goes to sleep during your check-in before you hit the sack.
(Turning the Moonlight off after my son has entered dreamland has worked just fine for me…and him, and it really cuts down on battery drain.)

But for one-off uses as a portable night light on the road… these glowing moons are perfect!

Happy ZZZs.

Five Ways to Help Make Your Tech Behave

I am embarrassed to reveal what is supposed to be a box of ‘organization’ for my tech. And believe me, this is not the end of it. The good news is there are ways to beat back your digital mess. I’ve got some tips to keep your zeroes and ones in order…

Don’t let the cold spring rain dampen your intentions to get your tech better organized. It’s a perfect time to tidy up. Just because your digital files don’t take up a lot of physical space doesn’t mean they’re not cluttering up your life!

Here are my five tips to help you fight the battle…

1.
Delete Half of Your Email
Have you lost an important email recently? If so, I bet you’ve got too much hanging around.

Let’s face it… you don’t need to hold onto most of your personal email. Much of it is probably unwanted marketing messages anyway.
(Usually from companies you naively gave your email address to in the first place)

And if you’ve got thousands of unread emails stacked up, that’s also a sign it’s time to thin out your in-box.

My favorite way to keep the job manageable is to simply sort by sender, select huge email chunks, and then delete away.
Don’t be shy…
(And it feels so good!)

2.
Organize Your New Family Photo Files at Least Once a Week
There’s really only one way manage the hundreds of photos you’re likely snapping a month:

  • You’ve got to regularly go through them on your computer and organize them into content buckets.
  • And to be really effective, you’ve got to delete the mediocre pics.
(They’re never going to get any better!)

I think rolling up your sleeves once a week should do it.
Here are a few tips on getting the task done.

3.
Buy a New Memory Card for Your Camera
Have you realized that SD cards have become so inexpensive?

Case in point:
On Amazon, I found this
SanDisk 32GB Ultra Class 10 SDHC UHS-1 memory card for $6.79.

Originally, the magic of digital photography was the mind-blowing concept that it didn’t cost you anything to snap a photo. You’d just delete the older photos on the card and your camera could keep on going… forever.

But no matter how much memory your card’s got, it does eventually run out of space.
(Especially if you like recording videos)
Because who’s really got the time to pay attention to how many MBs are left?

It takes some ongoing effort to delete the hundreds and sometimes thousands of photo and video files… unless you want to simply clear the whole card and start over.

I don’t know about you, but time is always something I need more of…

Have you ever found yourself struggling to quickly delete the old photos off your camera’s SD card right before you want to capture a priceless moment?
(It’s maddening.)

So here’s a radical concept…

  • Don’t try to keep up with your nearly filled memory card. When it’s time, just replace it.

It’s okay to buy new SD cards every so often to make sure your camera is ready for action. Sure, that’s a bit wasteful, but it’s not like having a tiny stack of old SD cards lying around is going to mess up the house.

Plus, SD cards don’t last forever. So it’s probably a good idea to recycle out the older ones every couple of years.
(You really don’t want to wait until a card with priceless photos turns into an unreadable plastic square.)

4.
Update the Software on Your Computer
Pop Quiz:
How often have you dropped what you’re doing to comply with this message on your screen: “Updates Ready to Install.”

Exactly.

Nobody wants to take the time to update your software. But you’ve got to do it!

I’m not saying you should be the first to install an update.
(That can also lead to problems…)

But if you wish to keep your computer healthy, updated software should be part of your plan…

5.
Get Rid of Your Old VHS Tapes
If you haven’t yet converted all that old content off your dusty tapes into digital files, it can’t be that important.
VHS is dead tech. Let it all go…

Enough said.

Bonus Tip!
Remember that new piece of tech you recently bought?
Register it online now, while you still know where the receipt is!
You don’t want to lose out on the manufacturer’s warrantee…

The Endless List
If you’ve got all of these digital projects already handled, congratulations.
(You must not be the parent of young children.)

So let me throw one more task onto your ‘to do’ list.
Are you caught up on making all those photo albums you’ve been meaning to create online?

Uh huh.

Get to work…!

Best Teaching Watch for a First Grader

Behold… the power of time on the wrist of a child’s hand. That can be a big deal the first time it happens. The question is which watch should you buy your kid to handle that bold responsibility...?

Behold… the power of time on the wrist of a child’s hand. That can be a big deal the first time it happens. The question is which watch should you buy your kid to handle that bold responsibility…?

How difficult is it to buy a decent children’s watch? Actually… surprisingly hard. Sure, there are seemingly dozens of choices out there. Many of them in the sub twenty-buck price range.

But here’s what I wanted…

  • Water resistance
  • An easy to wear band
  • An outer ring that displays the 60-second range numerically
  • And a watch that was going to hold up under the pressure of a kid’s active hand

And though I was searching for a ‘teaching-watch,’ I didn’t want something that looked like it was designed for a preschooler… my son is already in first grade!

Timex
I tried out a simple Timex for him a couple of years back.

  • Timex Kids My First Outdoors Watch

Unfortunately, it was a total misfire.

Sure… it was a great little watch, but it wasn’t really designed for a kid, other than it was small. There was nothing ‘fun’ about it. The watch was all black and it just didn’t stick with him.
(Plus, I think it was a little too early to introduce back then.)

What I wanted now was a watch that would have a little more pizzazz, as well as an easy to understand face with clearly differentiation between minutes, hours and seconds.

Marvel
As I began my online search, I came across a myriad of Marvel character watches on Amazon. I found a Spider-Man design that seemed perfect.
(He likes Spider-Man.)

The price was right, but it had a few mixed reviews.
So I kept on looking…

EasyRead Time Teacher
Then I ran across a specific ‘teaching-watch’ that was exactly what I wanted…

It looked so cool, I would wear it!
(Okay… theoretically)

But I spotted a review that reported the watch broke when dropped.
Hmmm… Not that I’m expecting a kid’s watch to be indestructible, but the cautionary tale prompted me to continue my search.
(Sigh)

Reviews are useful, but it’s hard to find unanimous opinion on just about anything! (A topic for another day…)

Flik Flak
Then, I happened upon ‘Flik Flak.’ It’s a kid’s watch brand made by Swatch.

Did they offer a Spider-Man watch with a clear display for all sixty seconds?
They certainly did…

  • Swatch Flik Flak Spider-Man FLNP021 for $45

Flik Flack watches cost more, but they claim to be tougher:

  • Swiss made
  • Shock resistant
  • Water Resistant
  • Machine Washable (!)

Okay, so this watch appeared to have a fighting chance to keep up with my boy on his daily adventures.

I thought my search was done, but when I looked up Flik Flak on Amazon, I had a coughing fit.
On Amazon, Flik Flaks are way more expensive!
(How unusual…. though they weren’t offered as an Amazon Prime option either. I guess Swatch and Amazon need to cozy up a bit more.)

So I went back to the Swatch website and bought the Flik Flak direct from the manufacturer.

Time Manipulation
My wife and I gave the Spider-Man Flik Flak to our son over the holidays, and…
…it was a big hit.
(He loved the design, and so far… it’s holding up!)

Plus, to be able to wear the concept of time on your wrist… I observed how mind blowing that was for him.

On the down side, it does put in place certain new limitations on his reality. Now, whenever I proclaim my parental, “Five more minutes until…” when trying to move on to the next part of our day, it’s harder for my little wizard to work his own personal blend of magic to ‘stretch time.’
(I think all you parents out there know what I’m talking about.)

Perhaps that will prompt him to begin a life-long journey towards inventing a time machine.

  • The Lester Kids’ Watch/Time Manipulator that can legitimately stretch five minutes into an hour of additional playtime

You heard it first!
