Seven Packing Tips for Successful Winter Business Travel

Some business trips are more challenging than others. And cold weather never helps. So packing smart can make all the difference…

I recently had something of an adventure at my job, and it involved enduring more than a little bit of extreme cold. I flew to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland to support our communications team on the ground.

It was an amazing week for me. Not only for being a part of the WEF experience and being immersed in the theme of responsive and responsible leadership, but also because it took me out of my comfort zone… in more ways than one.

Going Back to my Roots
My contribution called for some hands-on video skills that I hadn’t practiced in some time and then employing them with tight deadlines in the frigid outdoors.

And as the week progressed, my successful experience reminded me there are many ways to bring your best self to any challenge…

Grace Through Adversity
Life will test you. On any day… a moment can unexpectedly knock you off balance. So how should you handle the curve balls?

First off, how you approach them always makes a huge difference. But there are also certain precautions you can take to help prepare for the unexpected.

Here’s my list of packing tips to help you succeed during a challenging winter business trip.

#1
Bring a Travel Plug Bar
First off… I didn’t…

What I failed to realize when I was packing my type ‘J’ power plug adapters for Swiss outlets is these adapters are really bulky. So I wasn’t able to get more than one to fit next to other existing plugs in the wall outlet.

So if you’ve got multiple devices to power in one location, you’re going to need some help with a portable multi plug bar.

Here’s one good option:

#2
Pack Portable Power
So halfway into my trip, I ran into some additional electrical difficulty. I plugged in my iPhone charger next to the bed and tripped a circuit breaker. The power remained out in my room for the remainder of the trip.

Typically, I charge up my iPhone every night and also use it as my alarm clock for the morning.

So that would have been a problem without my wakeup alarm if I had to change my iPhone elsewhere overnight. Fortunately, I brought along some portable power via my trusty Anker Astro battery power bank.

I charged up the Astro during the day at another location and then used it at night to keep my iPhone up and running.

Thank you, Anker!

#3
Don’t Forget a Small Flashlight
See dark bedroom story above…

#4
Have a Good Compact Camera at the Ready
Sure, a smartphone can handle many photographic needs these days, and my iPhone is always there for me and easily accessible in my right pant pocket. But sometimes, you’re going to need a camera with a few more tricks up its sleeve.
Case in point…

Towards the end of my trip, I was called upon to take a team picture. An earlier attempt by a colleague using her smartphone in the dimly-lit space could not generate a usable photo. The question rang out from the group… Did I have a camera with me that could get the job done?

In fact, I did.

Remember my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10?
Bam!

The Lumix’s powerful 1” sensor and ample flash got the job done big time.

#5
Dress Like You’re Going on a Winter Hike
Simply put… Davos, Switzerland is wicked cold in January.
(I began my days at about 2 degrees Fahrenheit.)

And I knew that I was going to be spending a whole lot of time outdoors. So what are you supposed to do when the dress code skews semi formal?

The trick is to use the cutting-edge fiber technologies built into today’s outdoor-sports clothing. Sure, this kind of clothing isn’t cheap, but it’s really thin… and you can wear one or two base layers under a dress shirt and tie.
(As well as a base layer under your pants.)

So in preparation for the extreme environment, I did a little shopping at REI and Eastern Mountain Sports.

#6
Losing Stuff will Happen
But try not to lose the important items.

I dropped a glove more than once, and each time someone ran up and returned it to me. That’s great karma.
(Though I did pack an extra pair of gloves)

#7
Believe You Can
Speaking of karma… this list can’t only be about the tangible objects or tech that you bring with you. As I mentioned above, it’s also about what you bring from within…

In my view, it’s usually better to take a chance and risk failing instead of playing it safe and never trying to stretch yourself.

Now don’t get me wrong… you’ve got to be as prepared as you can be.

And never forget to bring the confidence that you can figure it out… no matter what.

All right, then…

Start packing!

How to Make Your Old iPhone Act Like New

Is your iPhone having trouble holding a charge? If you’ve owned it for long enough, that’s inevitable. Now it’s time to take your phone on a little trip…

Is your iPhone having trouble holding a charge? If you’ve owned it for long enough, that’s inevitable. Now it’s time to take your phone on a little trip…

My iPhone was in big trouble. After not even two and a half years, the battery in my old iPhone 6 Plus was showing some serious wear.

It just couldn’t make it as long anymore without a little pick me up. And never for more than a day. Sometimes it couldn’t even get to lunch. And then there were the times the battery level would suddenly go from 30% to zero.
(What?!)

In the cold… forget it. My iPhone would shut down faster than you can say,
“I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me,” five times fast.

Time to Make the Doctor’s Appointment
So I brought my ailing companion to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. The Genius ran the diagnostics on the battery and reported it was almost due for replacement… but not quite yet. I asked if it would last me until this fall.
(Yeah, I’m planning on pulling the trigger on the latest and greatest then.)

“Definitely not,” she said.

“How much for a new battery?”

“Eighty dollars.”

Huh.
So the way I saw it, I had a choice:

I could nurse my iPhone with a power drip and carry around an external battery or stay close to power outlets for as long as possible. And then rush back to the Apple Store for the operation when there was no longer an alternative…

Or I could electively do the battery swap out now.

Is that even a choice?

The Cost of Living in a Digital World
Look, no battery lasts forever.
It would have been nice for my iPhone to go a full three years on its original power cell, but it’s not like I didn’t get a lot of use out of it.

Is there any other device you depend more on every day?
Exactly.

Is $80 a lot of money for a silly battery? At one level… yes.
But considering the original cost of the iPhone, not at all.

Think of it as a simple maintenance cost…
(The thing doesn’t run on Pixie Dust.)

Tech Zen Restored
So my iPhone was whisked away to the back of the Apple Store for a ‘Battery Replaceadectamy.’
(No, you can’t do it yourself… or at least, you’re not supposed to.)

Now… my iPhone is back to its old self again.
And I’m a whole lot happier… not having to stress about all this.

Look at all of the time I’ve brought back into my life not having to always figure out how to feed my smartphone a little more juice.

I think it’s the best eighty bucks I’ve ever spent.

Best Teaching Watch for a First Grader

Behold… the power of time on the wrist of a child’s hand. That can be a big deal the first time it happens. The question is which watch should you buy your kid to handle that bold responsibility...?

Behold… the power of time on the wrist of a child’s hand. That can be a big deal the first time it happens. The question is which watch should you buy your kid to handle that bold responsibility…?

How difficult is it to buy a decent children’s watch? Actually… surprisingly hard. Sure, there are seemingly dozens of choices out there. Many of them in the sub twenty-buck price range.

But here’s what I wanted…

  • Water resistance
  • An easy to wear band
  • An outer ring that displays the 60-second range numerically
  • And a watch that was going to hold up under the pressure of a kid’s active hand

And though I was searching for a ‘teaching-watch,’ I didn’t want something that looked like it was designed for a preschooler… my son is already in first grade!

Timex
I tried out a simple Timex for him a couple of years back.

  • Timex Kids My First Outdoors Watch

Unfortunately, it was a total misfire.

Sure… it was a great little watch, but it wasn’t really designed for a kid, other than it was small. There was nothing ‘fun’ about it. The watch was all black and it just didn’t stick with him.
(Plus, I think it was a little too early to introduce back then.)

What I wanted now was a watch that would have a little more pizzazz, as well as an easy to understand face with clearly differentiation between minutes, hours and seconds.

Marvel
As I began my online search, I came across a myriad of Marvel character watches on Amazon. I found a Spider-Man design that seemed perfect.
(He likes Spider-Man.)

The price was right, but it had a few mixed reviews.
So I kept on looking…

EasyRead Time Teacher
Then I ran across a specific ‘teaching-watch’ that was exactly what I wanted…

It looked so cool, I would wear it!
(Okay… theoretically)

But I spotted a review that reported the watch broke when dropped.
Hmmm… Not that I’m expecting a kid’s watch to be indestructible, but the cautionary tale prompted me to continue my search.
(Sigh)

Reviews are useful, but it’s hard to find unanimous opinion on just about anything! (A topic for another day…)

Flik Flak
Then, I happened upon ‘Flik Flak.’ It’s a kid’s watch brand made by Swatch.

Did they offer a Spider-Man watch with a clear display for all sixty seconds?
They certainly did…

  • Swatch Flik Flak Spider-Man FLNP021 for $45

Flik Flack watches cost more, but they claim to be tougher:

  • Swiss made
  • Shock resistant
  • Water Resistant
  • Machine Washable (!)

Okay, so this watch appeared to have a fighting chance to keep up with my boy on his daily adventures.

I thought my search was done, but when I looked up Flik Flak on Amazon, I had a coughing fit.
On Amazon, Flik Flaks are way more expensive!
(How unusual…. though they weren’t offered as an Amazon Prime option either. I guess Swatch and Amazon need to cozy up a bit more.)

So I went back to the Swatch website and bought the Flik Flak direct from the manufacturer.

Time Manipulation
My wife and I gave the Spider-Man Flik Flak to our son over the holidays, and…
…it was a big hit.
(He loved the design, and so far… it’s holding up!)

Plus, to be able to wear the concept of time on your wrist… I observed how mind blowing that was for him.

On the down side, it does put in place certain new limitations on his reality. Now, whenever I proclaim my parental, “Five more minutes until…” when trying to move on to the next part of our day, it’s harder for my little wizard to work his own personal blend of magic to ‘stretch time.’
(I think all you parents out there know what I’m talking about.)

Perhaps that will prompt him to begin a life-long journey towards inventing a time machine.

  • The Lester Kids’ Watch/Time Manipulator that can legitimately stretch five minutes into an hour of additional playtime

You heard it first!
